This is a the "7 x 12AX7" version of the Doug's Tubes preamp tube cocktail kit and we've received great feedback on it. We have upgraded all preamp tone kits with Mullard over the Tung-Sol and Sovtek LPS. The tonekit allows hi-fi and guitarists alike to experiment and "tube-roll" preamp tubes in different slots of their amp. Currently we're recommending the following :

V1 - Mullard CV4004

V2 - EH 7025(JJ ECC83 in the high gain kit)

V3 - Gold Lion 12AX7 std pin (replaces the AC7 HG)

V4 - Ruby 12AX7AC5 HG

V5 - Ruby 12AX7AC5 HG

V6 - Sovtek 12AX7WA

V7 - Mullard 12AX7

OMG... it's a huge difference on all the channels!! Review by Bruno
Now I can get amazing tones on all the channels without even touch the 5 band EQ. What a difference! I´m buying another kit for backup. Thank you so much Doug! (Posted on 7/10/18)
Mesa Boogie MKV Review by Tom
Doug -

Just wanted to drop a note to say your preamp retube kit is excellent. Particularly in Channel 2 on my Mark V. That channel was always "ok" but now its like a blanket was lifted off and it's become very useable. I don't even run the GEQ with it anymore, which I had to do previously to get a decent sound. Channel 1 is also livelier and more detailed. I can't believe Mesa doesn't use your "cocktail" as the factory spec. Many thanks.

What a difference!!!! Review by David
I switched out my stock tubes in my EVH 5150 III 50watt to Doug's Tubes kit and man what a difference!!! There's more clarity and definition. The amp opens up more and feels responsive under my finger tips!!! Best tube kit ever!!!! (Posted on 9/19/15)
Mesa Boogie MKV Review by Bryan
Hey Doug,

I have been putting the Mesa Boogie Mark V through it's paces after installing the tube kit you recommended and provided me with. I wanted to take a moment to say thank you so much and also to just say WOW! The reason I bought the Mark V in the first place is because it was supposed to be like the "Swiss Army Knife" of amplifiers. But it ended up being a JEEP! An uncomfortable, rough riding and hard to control touchy pain in the arse that takes forever just to dial it in to a close enough setting. The cleans were ok but went from shimmer to ROAR with no in between. The gain stages in the crunch and lead channels were just too dark and muddy. Now....OMG! It's so expressive and articulate. Responds perfectly to every note. I spent a long time learning how to go into and out of every note of every chord cleanly and accurately. Now, I can hear my efforts so clearly and I am just thrilled. I have to say....I fell in love with those 7025s in the Channel 3 gain structure. I went with the high gain models fearing that there might be a bit too much hair but again WOW! You definitely know your tubes sir and how to match them up with the right amplifier. I am forever grateful that I happened to stumble across the source that said "Try Doug's Tubes." "They get it right there."

Thanks again Doug and looking forward to future purchases.

All the best to you.

Made a great amp (Mark-V) even better! Review by Alan
I love my Mesa MK-V but felt it was lacking something, some time ago I installed a set of JJ el-34 power tubes and this did improve the sound in many ways but there was certain sounds that I prefered the 6L6 tubes for. So today I installed this pre-amp set and got a great improvement while using the el34s, I decided to try the 6l6s again and wow just wow! More gain yet the clean channel stays clean, channel two which really shines with EL34s still sounded great! Even though there is more gain its not fuzzy or harse its just right. Thanks Doug you have a real winning combination here and I need look no further for my amps sweet spot. (Posted on 1/23/15)

Hello Doug,

Thanks a lot for these new tubes ! My Mark V sounds so great now ! All channels are hotter, richer, louder, with a perfect response.

This is exactly the improvement I was looking for.

Thanks again,

EVH 5150 iii 50 watt retube Review by Brad
Wow what an amazing difference!!! The cleans sound so great, crystal clear, and the high gain channels have so much definition and attack! Definitely recommend this tone kit if you have this amp. So happy with these results! (Posted on 11/13/13)
Mesa MK V retube(7 x 12AX7 tone kit) Review by Lubo
Hey Doug,

I am ecstatic! My amp has never sounded so good! The clean channel is cleaner at higher volumes and distorts only when I want it to. Love the harmonics on all channels! The mesa EL34s made my clean channel not clean any more. My cleans are back! As good as the 6L6s. Overall, lower noise at high volumes and high gain across the board… I do not need to even look at any other amp now. Works really nice with any kind of boost on any setting.

I will be a repeat customer for sure!

Thank you,

Excellent upgrade for an already wonderful amp Review by farren
I, too, ordered this set with the high gain/balanced V7 option for my Mark V. I was already in love with this amp, but now it's even more perfect. The new tubes are considerly higher gain and brighter than the stock Mesa tubes, but not at all at the cost of clarity or an increase in noise. Channel 1 sounds more alive than ever with no unwanted premature break-up, channel 2 finally has balls at bedroom volumes, and channel 3 sounds that much more fluid at any volume level. I don't have to sacrifice significant tone to play quiet now.

I looked at my amp's valve placement and realized Doug's default positions made sense for what I wanted to accomplish.

I was a little worried about high gain tubes messying up my clean tone, but I actually think the clean channel (fat mode) benefited from the swap more than any other channel.

If you're worried about added brightness, realize this is more than likely an indirect result of increased gain. The solution is simple: tweak your old favorite settings so that you use a little less presence, treble, and 6600 hz if you have a Mark.

Replace your dark, medium gain stock fare with these tubes no matter what style you play, in my opinion. Chances are, your amp, whatever you may have, will allow you to compensate even if you don't play with a lot of gain normally. (Posted on 3/3/13)
Sounds perfect Review by 1adam12
I've been trying for a while now to dial in the tone I want on my Mark V. I tried some EL34's and that got me closer, but not guite. I just received the "7 x 12ax7" cocktail today and installed it in my amp with the old 6L6's and it sounds perfect!! Such a thick, rich tone... Even at bedroom volume! Thanks Doug!!
